What to do if it rains on your wedding day?

I mostly work in the UK, and as we know… British weather can be a little bit predictable at best. I am very lucky in that most of my couples who book me are pretty laid back, they wouldn’t let something like a bit of rain ruin their day! That said, I wanted to put together a post to help prepare & manage expectations if some thunder clouds do appear.

Coordinate with your venue

If you have a venue with lots of indoor space (even if you hadn’t planned to use it) find out where you could access for drinks, confetti or photos if the outdoors isn’t possible. Your photographer will be an expert at hunting out gorgeous light even inside, just do a pivot on what you thought your photos were going to be and trust them!

Be prepared…

Whatever the season it pays to be prepared. Even if you’re getting married in the height of summer if you’re planning a fully outdoor wedding it would be useful to think about what you’re going to do if that actually can’t happen (field too muddy to erect a marquee, flooding, venue won’t let you have it outdoors etc). Even just having a Plan B that you know is still great can help alleviate any worries! You can hire marquees from tons of places, even village halls etc often have them for cheap and last minute if you need somewhere covered for your drinks reception.

Make sure you have plenty of brollies (nice one, or clear ones, not shit branded ones!) have some wellies to hand, a cool rain coat or warm item too!

Also make sure your guests are prepared, if people are turning up in stiletto shoes to a muddy field there might be some grumbling so make sure people are appropriately dressed for celebrations. If you’ve never seen them there are these clever little heel stopper things which really help!

.. but also roll with it!

Nothing ruins photos worse than a miserable face! If things don’t go to plan, just smile & embrace it.. it’s life. If you’ve done all you can and it still ends up being super wet just don the wellies and the umbrella and go with the flow, with a giant smile on your face.

Here are some of my all time favourite weddings where there has definitely been rain present - and it hasn’t mattered a bit!
