What is an unplugged wedding?

The topic on the blog today is something that’s been bugging me all summer long. I’ve written about the positives on unplugged weddings before and I am so happy that they’ve had a huge upturn this year with lots of my couples having one – and even making cool signs to say so!

Couples are wanting their guests to A) be wholly present on their wedding day and not with half an eye on Instagram B) not have lots of ugly phones in the photos and C) keep images of themselves private until all the evening guests are there. Whatever your reasoning I am personally all for it – it’s rare in this day and age we are fully present for anything without a screen in our hand and I think for something as special as a wedding it’s respectful to pay attention.

Also, from my perspective, there have been a few instances in the last year where it’s been an actual issue for me doing my job and I wanted to share some photos from that to raise guest (and couple) awareness of how it can impact your images.

Also during bridal prep I so often get bridesmaids with their phones out all the time, especially for a big moment like the dress reveal. PLEASE just think about that experience for the bride, she wants to see your faces not the back of the phone! And it looks crap in photos. There is plenty of time later to snap pics, just be present for this one moment.

I know it’s people just not thinking most of the time but you only get that one chance to walk down the aisle (this is the worse time it happens!) and for a lot of people that’s a very important shot. Yes, I can sometimes work around it but that might mean changing my position and causing attention which is the last thing I want to do and unfortunately, it’s not one of those things you can fix with post production editing either.

If you’re a wedding guest, listen up and just put your phone away for the ceremony. You have all day to take photographs – enjoy this moment!

If you’re a couple, think about having a phone-free ceremony. You can make a jazzy sign, get the registrar to make an announcement or before put it on the invites / order of service.
